Description of the art
The mural depicts a scene where fantasy and reality blend, inspired by the water women, the “Dones d’aigua” of Catalan mythology. These legendary creatures live in springs, rivers, ponds and other places linked to water, and are part of Catalan popular imagination as beings associated with nature and the regeneration of life. The myth says they only come out at night, which is why the character’s hair turns into a starry night sky, emphasising her magical nature.
The piece establishes a direct link with the surroundings of the Besòs river and the environmental recovery it has undergone in recent decades. Where a severely degraded landscape once prevailed, today we find a living ecosystem that has enabled the return of numerous species of flora and fauna. From this reality, the water woman is read as an allegory of nature’s capacity for regeneration and its transformative power.
The mural shows this mythological being in dialogue with some of the birds that inhabit the Besòs river, creating a connection between natural and cultural heritage. The work invites viewers to rediscover the territory through a poetic and symbolic gaze, highlighting the importance of river ecosystems and the need to preserve the natural spaces that coexist with the urban environment.
